Eligibility

Who can apply.

Valley Family Medicine accepts applications from graduates of:

  • Medical schools in the United States accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
  • Colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
  • Medical schools outside the United States, for graduates who have a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction

Valley Family Medicine does not sponsor visas. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have permanent resident status at the time of application.

Your application

What to include.

Everything is submitted through ERAS.
  1. Date of graduation

Applicants must have graduated from medical school within the last five years and be able to show hands-on U.S. clinical experience within the 12 months before applying. A letter of recommendation from the primary clinical attending of that experience is required.

  2. Personal statement

Tell us how the training at Valley Family Medicine fits your educational goals, and about your specific interest in obstetrics.

  3. Two letters of recommendation

From physicians who directly supervised your care of patients. At least one must be in family medicine or general internal medicine.

  4. Dean's letter

Your Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE), submitted through ERAS.

  5. USMLE or COMLEX transcripts

Passing scores on every Step taken, competitive with others applying to the program. COMLEX is accepted in place of USMLE for osteopathic applicants. Step 1 and Step 2 CK must be passed, with transcripts in ERAS, before the official NRMP rank deadline; candidates who haven't met this can't be ranked.

Applicant FAQs

Common questions.

What makes Valley different from other family medicine programs?
A genuine Clinic First model — residents keep seeing their own continuity patients even during inpatient, OB, and elective rotations — combined with substantial obstetric training and a diverse, community-based patient population in South King County.
How much OB experience will I get?
Valley Medical Center has more than 3,000 deliveries a year. The program's benchmark is 80 vaginal deliveries per resident, and most residents graduate with more than 100 vaginal deliveries plus additional C-section opportunities.
How much time will I spend in clinic?
PGY-2s and PGY-3s are in clinic an average of four days a week; PGY-1s are in clinic two to four days a week depending on the rotation. Continuity approaches 75% by the third year.
Where is the program located?
Renton, Washington, in the Puget Sound region — on the Valley Medical Center campus, centrally located relative to Seattle and the broader South King County community the clinic serves.
How do I apply?
Through ERAS only; materials sent by email or fax aren't accepted. The program fills its first-year positions through the NRMP Match. The application deadline is December 1, 2026.
Does the program accept international medical graduates or sponsor visas?
Graduates of medical schools outside the United States may apply if they hold a valid ECFMG certificate or a full and unrestricted U.S. medical license, and have hands-on U.S. clinical experience within the past 12 months. The program does not sponsor visas: applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents at the time of application.
Are interviews in person or virtual?
We offer a hybrid of in-person and virtual interviews.
Is there a pre-interview dinner?
Yes. Candidates invited to interview are invited to a resident-hosted dinner the evening before their interview day.

Applicants are responsible for the completeness and accuracy of the information they provide, and the program provides complete and accurate information to interviewees.
